European Capital of Culture in 2021
Friday, September 16th 2016, Timișoara was designated to be one of the European Capital of Culture in 2021. The main concept of the bid book, on which the local Association team worked for about 6 years, is "Shine your light/Light up your city".

Once called "Little Vienna", Timișoara is a diamond in the rough, with beautiful Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture that will steal your heart away and make you come back for more!
The opera and the entrance ticket only cost 5 euros. That is, if you happen to get a ticket, as young people here are keen on culture and the shows are usually sold out.

Oldest Brewery in the Country - Check!
The oldest brewery in nowadays Romania is called Timișoreana (meaning literrally "From Timișoara"), and it's getting people in the mood since 1718!

The Place that Sparked the Revolution
Timișoara is the place where the anti-communist revolution in Romania started back in 1989. Oh, yes, we’ve even got a piece of the Berlin wall along with many bullet holes all over town. If you’re lucky, you may even spot some of our 19th century cannon balls!
Where Espresso Coffee was Invented
Ferenc (aka Francesco) Illy, founder of the Illy coffee brand and inventor of the first automatic coffee machine (the predecessor of today's espresso machine), was born and raised right here in Timișoara. Mmmm, steamy coffee in our Union Square will make your day!

Timisoara was, in turn, part of the The Ottoman Empire, the Holy Roman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire during it's long history. And they all left their mark on the city.
